TEASER FROM GRAVE TALKER:

“How many people in this town know you can see ghosts?”

I didn’t even get to taste the yummy goodness of my wonderfully crispy taco—which was what I was focusing on so I could keep my face a blank mask.

I wanted to quip back with something like, “Living or dead?” but I knew better. “It’s time for you to leave. Less than a minute and you’ve already worn out your welcome. You must be popular with all the girls.”

In less time than it took him to toss a verbal bomb into my living room, I had my door open and had gestured for him to walk through it.

Despite my clear invitation for him to get out of my house, La Roux sat down in Hildy’s favorite chair and settled in.

“Oh, I do okay. Come on, Adler. Don’t you want to know how I know you can see ghosts? Don’t you want to know if I think you’re crazy?”

TEASER FROM SOUL READER:

“They warned me about this, you know,” Bastian began, his voice pitched low, his booted feet striding close but not piercing my bubble.

I kept my gaze latched onto his feet and refused to look up. If I caught sight of his neck, of his blood pulsing in that lovely vein, I’d lose it.

I cleared my throat, an action that took far too much effort and hurt for some reason. My throat was dry. Why was it so dry? “Warned you about what?”

“He said that, in time, I would want to be bitten. That the thought of you hungry or in pain would make me want to serve myself up so you didn’t suffer. That it was dangerous and blissful and would likely cause you to leave us.”

His feet moved closer, piercing my bubble. The heat of him washed over me.

I shook my head, which I instantly regretted because blood loss was a thing and I was losing a lot of it, the healing process taking far too long.

“I don’t want to be tied to anyone. I don’t want a home. I don’t want friends.” It was a lie—a whole mountain of lies—but it was the truth, too. I didn’t want a tie to someone who was going to leave me. I didn’t want a home if I was going to lose it. I didn’t want friends that would die on me.

“Too bad.”

TEASER FROM THE WRONG WITCH:

“You’re bleeding. How long have you been bleeding, Wren?”

Why did my name on his lips make my insides go funny? But the best I could do was shrug.

Again.

“I was too scared to look. I worried if I took the boot off to check, I wouldn’t be able to get it back on. Walking in the middle of nowhere without shoes on seemed like a bad plan.”

Gently, I tugged on my arm, signaling him to let me go, but all it did was make his eyes start glowing as a growl rumbled from his chest.

No moving. Got it.

“You need a keeper, you know that?” he murmured, the words harsh but his tone was something else. He readjusted his grip, pulling me closer, his nose barely an inch from mine as his gaze bore a hole into me.

“When are you going to start looking out for yourself, huh?”
